Superman: Legacy Is Set to Fix Mistakes of Previous Man of Steel Movies

No one can deny that the movie and television industries are in the era of reboots, remakes, and sequels. In the superhero world, almost every narrative has been told so many times, with different actors playing the characters and different directors telling them how. Right now that James Gunn is revamping the DC Universe, he intends to deliver a new take on Superman’s story, and in a recent interview with Variety, the writer-director shared how he is going to approach his upcoming Superman: Legacy.

“I don’t think the movie would be worth making if it was just a redo of any other Superman adaptation... For us to truly thrive as a studio, we need to honor the past of these characters while simultaneously seeing them in a new light,” said Gunn.

So far, significant details on the upcoming Superman film are still being kept under wraps, especially the most anticipated casting. All that has been said is that Superman: Legacy will focus on a younger version of the hero and that the plot will see the Kryptonian “reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.”

In another interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn also said that his upcoming venture with DC will take a fresh approach to the Man of Steel narrative. He stated that the film would have a different ambiance than the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

“I learned so much from making these [Guardians] movies,” he said. “But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”

Since Henry Cavill's removal from the role of Superman, Gunn has faced a barrage of criticism from those who are dissatisfied with his decision. Despite Cavill being the fan favorite, It's also visible that there are things that can be improved in his portrayal and take on Clark Kent, one of which is his early death in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and his badly retouched lower face in the theatrical cut of Justice League. Hopefully, other than this, Gunn will be keener on making the upcoming film better and more desirable to its audience.

Superman: Legacy is set to have its world premiere on July 11, 2025.
