Suicide Squad Director Says ‘Natural Progression’ for Harley is to End Up with Poison Ivy

After the announcement of Zack Snyder's Justice League, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has been more open about the release of his original version of the movie. He's been revealing more things about the film online, and he just shared this interesting tidbit about his intention for Harley Quinn's character arc.

Replying to a fan that was analyzing the dynamic between Joker and Harley Quinn, Ayer replied that Harley's relationship with Ivy was the ‘natural progression' for her character. He posts:

While the theatrical cut of the movie was kind of unclear about the dynamic between Joker and Harley, Ayer had been adamant that his original vision for the film was to depict the Joker as an abusive partner, and it was always his intention to have Harley break away from him and become her own character.

For now, Harley is set to make an appearance in James Gunn's reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad, but after that, there have been mixed reports of where she's headed to next. Some say that she could be appearing in a Gotham City Sirens film (which Ayer had been working on for a while), and some think she could be in a Harley v Joker movie. We don't really know for now, but hopefully, we get an update after we get a better look at The Suicide Squad.

We don't know if HBO Max will eventually release Ayer's original take on the film, but Gunn's The Suicide Squad is set for a release on Aug. 6, 2021.
