Star Wars: Rian Johnson Explains Why He Deleted 20,000 Tweets

James Gunn's firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continues to be an unpopular decision. For those who don't know, he was fired after Trump supporters unearthed some older tweets so that the man could be "humbled" since he is an outspoken critic of the current President. Star Wars director Rian Johnson responded to this by deleting over 20,000 of his tweets and while the statement was obvious, he has since explained why it was done.

Responding to a tweet from The Mary Sue, Johnson revealed that he only did it so that trolls wouldn't try to weaponize it against him. The Last Jedi director claims that he hasn't said anything as bad as James Gunn but he wants to cover his tracks just in case.

What happens on the internet stays there of course but this will probably be a popular move for filmmakers moving forward, which is pretty unfortunate. No one is perfect and people can learn from their mistakes but with this new zero-tolerance age we live in, which isn't all bad mind you, people are going to have to be more careful.

Johnson is currently working on a new Star Wars trilogy that will feel completely different from everything we've seen in a Star Wars film thus far. Considering how polarizing the reaction has been to this movie, he might have needed to delete those tweets to keep his job.
