Star Wars George Lucas Is Officially America’s Richest Celebrity

It might have been quite a while since George Lucas has had his hands at directing a Star Wars movie ever since 2005 when the filmmaker was directing Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Still, it looks like the Star Wars creator remains one of the richest people here in the US.

Forbes just recently released a list of the country's richest celebrities and it seems like Lucas just topped the list as the wealthiest personality in America. Right now Lucas is sitting with an estimated net worth of $5.4 billion, a number the publication attributes to Lucas' decision to sell Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.1 billion back in 2012.

Of course, while Lucas did sell the film rights of the Star Wars franchise, he did keep the licensing and merchandising rights – a pretty smart move considering that the Star Wars movies make a whole lot in the sale of toys and other collectible items.

Another familiar name in Forbes' list of wealthy celebrities is another filmmaker, Indiana Jones director, Steven Spielberg. Coming in with an estimated net worth of $3.7 billion, the prolific filmmaker comes in second right after Lucas.

Other names on the list include Oprah Winfrey who comes at an estimated net worth of $2.8 billion, and then Michael Jordan who's worth $1.7 billion. The fifth spot is shared by Jay Z and Kylie Jenner who both come in with an estimated net worth of $900 million each.

It's certainly interesting to see how well Lucas is doing despite having very little involvement in Lucasfilm's new sequel trilogy. Guess that Disney deal really did him well.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
