Daisy Ridley is set to return as Rey in an upcoming new Star Wars movie that is slated to release in 2026. The announcement was made by Lucasfilm earlier this year to the surprise of many fans.

So far, the plot details remain scarce on Ridley's new movie except that it is set around 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker and she is setting up a new Jedi order.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is attached to direct the film while Steven Knight is penning the current draft of the screenplay. Production is reportedly set to begin next year.

Since the announcement, fans have been curious about the new movie and there is a lot of hope that it will be a worthy return of the character and the franchise on the big screen.

In a recent interview with Collider, Ridley shared some details on the development of her upcoming Star Wars movie.

First, she recalled the moment that happened earlier this year when she had a meeting with Lucasfilm about her return to the franchise after attending the Sundance Film Festival.

"I will tell you, Steve, when I saw you in Park City, I had not been approached. I was asked some, not by you, but I was asked something when I was there and strangely, people were asking me stuff and I was like, 'No, I'm not doing another one.' Then it all happened after I came back. It was such a nice reception," Ridley said.

Then, the actress shared what she felt when she appeared at the Star Wars Celebration event last April to announce her new movie.

She recalled, "I was shitting myself before I went on stage, because no one knew I was going to that. No one knew I was going to Celebration, bar like Kathy [Kennedy] and there were a couple of people. I was so nervous. Oh my God. It was such a wonderful reception. I'm very excited."

Ridley also offered some tidbits about her new Star Wars movie where she called the story "really cool" and unexpected.

"The story is really cool. I'm waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don't have any other updates. It's not what I expected, but I'm very excited," she said.

While she didn't give any details about the plot of her new movie, she did express her excitement over Lucasfilm's plans and it is a sign that it could be a promising return for her.

Obviously, we will never know until we hear more concrete details or watch the film itself if it is actually as exciting as Ridley hinted, but it is encouraging enough based on the actress' comments and hopefully, it is as promising as it initially sounds considering what's at stake on the franchise itself.

The untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Star Wars movie is slated for release in theaters on May 22, 2026.
