Cinema etiquette has become a huge topic this past week, especially in the US. But now, it seems that it’s also a big deal in Japan as Toho announced a Spy x Family PSA that reminds audience members about proper movie theater etiquette.

This new PSA was revealed on the official Spy x Family Twitter account.

While it seems like a promotion for the upcoming Code: White film, it is instead a general PSA that’s shown ahead of movie screenings.

Movie Theater Etiquette Becomes Huge Topic After COVID

Movie theaters suffered a lot during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. But now, the movie industry is trying to recover from the previous drops in attendance.

While box office numbers haven’t recovered from 2019 levels, the industry is showing signs of life thanks to some big releases.

Just last week, Barbie and Oppenheimer became major events as moviegoers filled cinemas to watch them.

Driven in part by the Barbenheimer trend, the two became huge box-office hits. Fans of the movies also took to social media to share their reactions.

Over the past week, there have been lots of complaints online about audience members being loud, or worse, taking photos while the movie is playing.

In response, there has been a lot of discourse about how people have forgotten about proper movie theater etiquette since the pandemic, with many likening it to what’s happening with concerts.

Online, this may seem like a US-centric issue. But it seems that it’s something that needs to be addressed, even in Japan, surprisingly.

Toho recently announced a special Spy x Family public service announcement that will be shown in Toho Cinemas across Japan.

This PSA will play ahead of screenings to remind viewers about proper etiquette.

While the video wasn’t shown in full, a short clip of it was released on Twitter, and it shows Anya Forger eagerly awaiting the screening of Spy Wars.

According to Animate Times, this video will feature the Forger family as they deliver a lecture on proper manners in a movie theater.

This might be an unexpected collaboration to some, but it makes sense given that Toho (who also owns Toho Cinema locations in Japan) is a part of the Spy x Family production committee.

The PSA is only going to be shown in Japan, but given how big of a topic it is in the US, showing a PSA like this is possibly something that many moviegoers in America may need.
