The Tokyo Anime Awards (officially called the Tokyo Anime Award Festival) is one of the most esteemed awards in Japan for the industry.

Since it began back in 2002, it has awarded some of the most acclaimed anime movies, including the likes of Spirited Away, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and The Wind Rises.

While it only awarded one movie or series when it began, separate Film and Television anime categories were put in place beginning in 2014.

For 2022, the TV Anime Award winner is Spy x Family, the mega-hit series by Wit Studio and CloverWorks.

If you ask any anime fan which show is most likely to win, most will likely say Spy x Family.

After all, it was arguably the most popular anime show of the year as it captured the hearts of many viewers that don’t typically watch anime.

It was also one of the most-watched anime of the year based on its streaming numbers.

Plus, its popularity is undeniable given the sheer number of merch lines and collabs that it got over the past months.

In the Film category, One Piece Film: Red was given the top honor. Again, this should come as no surprise to many fans given how big of a hit the movie was at both Japan’s and the international box office.

It’s also a well-received movie by critics and fans alike, as many praised the movie’s impressive animation and catchy soundtrack.

Plus, seeing Shanks in action is something that many fans have wished for.

As for the individual award winners, these include Blue Period screenwriter Reiko Yoshida, Mob Psycho 100 III animator Yoshimichi Kameda, and Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc art/color designer Koji Eto.

Though for these awards, the anime titles that they are awarded for have not been revealed yet.

For the full list of winners and detailed info, you’ll want to wait for the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2023 ceremony, which will happen on March 10, 2023.
