Solo Has The Biggest Opening For A Heist Movie

Solo: A Star Wars Story's opening weekend haul might not seem much for a Star Wars film, but as a heist film, Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars spinoff is doing pretty well.

According to Mashable, Solo: A Star Wars Story's opening weekend is pretty much a success from a certain point of view, saying that the film has become the top-earning heist film in history, beating mega-hit heist movies like National Treasure, Inception, and Ocean's Eleven. Earning $101 million at the domestic box office during its four-day Memorial Day weekend opening, Solo has managed to top Fast Five's $86.1 million opening.

Though Box Office Mojo doesn't really list Solo: A Star Wars Story as a heist/ caper film, the film's screenwriters Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan have constantly been telling the press that Solo isn't just an origin movie, it's a heist movie as well.

However, while Solo's numbers might seem like a success if the film is properly taken as a heist film, but in the end, the Star Wars spinoff's opening weekend haul will still find itself bogged down by its budget. Lucasfilm and Disney might not have confirmed the budget that they allocated for Solo, but earlier reports revealed that the film's production budget swelled to $250 million after the movie's directorial shake-up last year.

It probably cost a lot for Disney to have Ron Howard reshoot the footage taken by original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. If the $250 million budget is true, then Solo's success as a heist film will actually seem like nothing in the long run.
