Aside from being one of this season’s most praised anime, the Skip and Loafer manga was recently given the General Award at the 2023 Kodansha Manga Awards, one of the industry’s most prestigious prizes.
The 47th Kodansha Manga Award winners were announced just recently, and three well-known titles were given the award.
While it may not be as popular as other school romance titles, those who watch the ongoing Skip and Loafer anime believe that the series is deserving of its prize.
Skip and Loafer: One of This Season’s Surprise Highlights
Unlike the quieter Winter 2023 season, Spring 2023 features lots of highly anticipated shows, including Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc, as well as Oshi no Ko, which became a huge hit following its premiere.
Though it’s not among the top 3 in terms of popularity, the Skip and Loafer anime by P.A. Works has gained a lot of fans after its first few episodes.
In fact, each new episode trends on Twitter with a couple of thousand tweets every time they’re released.
Not to mention that it’s usually within the top 5 most upvoted non-sequel anime on Reddit this season.
A lot of the show’s appeal lies in its loveable characters, especially Mitsumi and Shima. Many find Mitsumi’s dorky yet adorable personality a joy to watch.
It also helps that the series stands out among other high school romance anime thanks to its realism.
Instead of being over-the-top, the anime presents the complexities of adolescence realistically while still being wholesome.

47th Kodansha Manga Award Recognizes Skip and Loafer
The Kodansha Manga Award is one of Japan’s longest-running annual awards, and it has three categories: shonen, shojo, and general.
Despite seeming like a shojo manga, Skip and Loafer is actually a seinen title that’s serialized in Monthly Afternoon. Because of this, the manga received the general prize.
Skip and Loafer took home the prize, though the other general category manga titles are also worth looking at.
These include The Darwin Incident, Medalist, and Manshuu Ahen Squad, among others.
As for the other categories, Shangri-La Frontier took home the shonen category award while the shojo category award was won by My Girlfriend’s Child.
New chapters of Skip and Loafer are released every month. Meanwhile, new episodes of the anime are streamed weekly on Crunchyroll in the US and other selected regions.
