Aside from getting lots of praise from fans, Skip and Loafer has also been recommended by the New York Times as a must-watch series.

Because the New York Times doesn’t exactly review seasonal anime titles, it was a surprise to see it get recommended by the Times’ television critic Mike Hale.

Aside from getting recommended, Hale also explained some of the things that Skip and Loafer does well compared to American live-action productions in the same genre.

In the latest entry to the Critic’s Notebook article series that explores some of the stand-out TV and streaming releases, Hale listed some of his recommended international shows.

Among these is Skip and Loafer, an ongoing anime from P.A. Works that has gotten a lot of attention this season thanks to its realistic depiction of high-school life. It also got a lot of praise for its trans representation.

Along with praise from anime fans, the anime’s Critic’s Notebook entry features an interesting explanation of what makes the show so good.

As Hale puts it, Skip and Loafer is an “expressionistic depiction of high-school life that still feels unforced and natural” that American live-action TV shows still can’t provide consistently.

Hale also mentions that the anime features some interesting perspectives, including how it pokes fun at the conventions of Studio Ghibli movies in its opening episode.

Plus, Hale ends that the show is “a lighthearted essay on loneliness and the life-or-death nature of every decision a 15-year-old makes.”
