Sigourney Weaver Weighs in on Ripley's Return to Alien Franchise

There is little doubt that the Alien franchise got its start in Ridley Scott's 1979 horror flick and its success is largely attributed to Sigourney Weaver's performance as Ellen Ripley. But is there any chance that Ripley will return in future projects? Weaver has addressed the possibility of returning to the franchise.

Sigourney Weaver recently spoke about the Alien franchise in the latest issue of Total Film magazine and she was quick to point out that she was ready to return as Ripley but the project didn't push forward (via GamesRadar).

"There are all kinds of younger actors taking this kind of role. And there was an Alien [film] that I really wanted to do with Neill Blomkamp and we didn’t get to do that, but, you know, that ship has sailed," Weaver said.

"I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. I put in my time in space!" she added.

Weaver continued by stating that Ridley Scott made sure that Ripley would be a significant part of cinematic history.

"I think Ridley has a lot to do with [the longevity of Ellen Ripley and Alien]," she said. "They made Ripley a woman, without making her this helpless creature. Because I think I was very lucky. These were men who were creating this woman character, but they liked and respected strong women."

Sigourney Weaver first played Ellen Ripley in 1979's Alien. She reprised the role in Aliens and Alien 3 where the character was killed off. However, Weaver was brought back as a Ripley/xenomorph hybrid in Alien Resurrection in 1997. This would be Weaver's final appearance as the iconic character.

An untitled Alien film is currently in development with Fede Alvarez confirmed to direct. The new project will star Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Although the project has not been given a release date, it is expected to premiere on Hulu.
