Shazam! Fury of the Gods Director Claims Sequel Is A ‘Mini-Avengers’ Film

2023 is seemingly filled with promising futures for Marvel and DC franchises, seeing as DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced their new slate for 2025 along with Marvel Phase 5 opening with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Upon nearing the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, director David Sandberg openly compared the Shazam sequel to a ‘mini-Avengers’ film, a pretty similar comment from Ant-Man 3 director Peyton Reed on the MCU threequel.

“[Shazam! Fury of the Gods] is like a mini-Avengers movie… That’s how I saw it because there are so many characters.” Sandberg told in a new interview with GamesRadar, “You have all these heroes, you have the villains, you have the monsters… It’s a lot of movie packed into its runtime. And it’s complicated. Just shooting and staging up to 11 characters in a scene… Where do you put everyone? It’s really hard!”

One of the many reasons the Shazam 2 director had managed to include the Shazam family fighting against the daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and not to mention, a huge dragon coming their way, is the fact that they had “more resources” as compared to Shazam’s debut film.

Not only has the director teased about its cast members appearing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but even the comparison to that of a feature film full of ‘mini-Avengers’, is the same treatment that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania received from its director.

The ambitious plan of mini-Avengers is most likely pertaining to the vast introduction of more villains into the DCU and having ‘younger Avengers’ competing with literal DC gods in the DCU, which definitely heightens the stakes even more at chances of survival despite being bestowed with god-like powers.

The cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods includes Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Faith Herman, Grace Fulton, Jovan Armand, Ian Chen, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Helen Mirren with Lucy Liu.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated to premiere on March 17, 2023. You can check out more details and updates about it here.
