The box office performance of Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been disappointing as it failed to surpass the record of the first film. The global numbers are also underwhelming as they didn't contribute to amplifying its box office legs and, as a result, the sequel is now expected to not break even.
With its disappointing results, there have been questions about whether its second weekend will have a decline or whether word-of-mouth might help keep the drop to a minimum and perhaps have good box office legs despite the initial tepid results.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Shazam! Fury of the Gods suffered a 68% drop on its second weekend as it only earned $9.7 million. It is no. 2 in the chart with the newly-released John Wick: Chapter 4 leading as it managed to have its franchise-best record with a $73.5 million opening.
It's a disappointing performance for the film since it is one of the worst drops for a DC film in box office history and it is a sign that there are no strong box office legs in the coming weeks. The film will also suffer with more competition as upcoming films such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will release soon.
In the aftermath of its disappointing box office results, people have been theorizing about why the film wasn't able to penetrate similar numbers as the first film or any other successful DC films that have been released during the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are also some questions about whether this will affect the character's future in the new DCU franchise, which is still uncertain as of this moment. It would be interesting to see what will happen in the coming months. Based on the numbers alone, that looks unlikely now.
