Shangri-La Frontier is an action-fantasy anime set in the near future where full-dive VR games have become the popular form of gaming. But is Shangri-La Frontier based on a real game?
The story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a skilled gamer who seeks out “trash games” and aims to master them.
One day, Rakuro tries out a popular VR game called Shangri-La Frontier and enters its world as the player character “Sunraku”. Rakuro then realizes that Shangri-La Frontier is not like other games he has played before.
He forms a team with other players and works with them to overcome the challenges in the game. Rakuro also aims to uncover the secrets that Shangri-La Frontier hides.

Is Shangri-La Frontier Based on a Real Game?
Shangri-La Frontier is not based on a real game. Writer Katarina said they once read a virtual reality-type story and got inspired by that work, which then led to the creation of Shangri-La Frontier. Katarina is also a gamer.
Shangri-La Frontier started as a web novel series written by Katarina that began publishing on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2017.
The series then received a manga adaptation illustrated by Ryosuke Fuji. The manga started serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2020.
The Shangri-La Frontier manga is still ongoing. So far, 15 volumes have been published, with over 100 chapters.
While Shangri-La Frontier is not based on a real game, a game is being developed based on Katarina’s work.

What We Know So Far About the Shangri-La Frontier Video Game Adaptation
The Shangri-La Frontier video game adaptation is being developed by Netmarble Nexus, a South Korean mobile game developer.
Netmarble has yet to reveal details regarding the release date and platforms for the Shangri-La Frontier game, although a trailer was already released in July 2023.
The Shangri-La Frontier video game will feature voice actors from the anime in their roles, including Yuma Uchida as Rakuro Hizutome/Sunraku and Rina Hidaka as Emul.
Other Shangri-La Frontier characters that appear in the trailer include Rei Saiga/Psyger-0, Towa Amane/Arthur Pencilgon, and Kei Uomi/Oikatzo.
