Seth McFarlane's The Orville Consults With Neil deGrasse Tyson for Scientific Accuracy

Seth McFarlane's The Orville might have the occasional Family Guy-like joke but it seems like it has managed to find a place in the hearts of many sci-fi fans. Those that enjoy old-school Star Trek and other similar shows have had a good time with McFarlane's latest pet project. Funnily enough, despite all of the off-world antics that happen in the show, the writers want it to be scientifically accurate.

During NYCC (via Screen Rant), executive producer Jason Clark confirmed that they reach out to some scientific advisors to make sure things are somewhat realistic and one of those people is none other than Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Apparently, the production team of The Orville take their science-fiction seriously and want to make sure that the various space encounters the show's team goes through is scientifically accurate. That's a lot of effort for a show that likes fart jokes but it's a detail that fans of the genre can appreciate.

"There is some crossover, in that Andre Bormanis and Seth MacFarlane, who's an incredible part of the Cosmos storytelling team, and then Andre, who's our science advisor, actually advises on both shows. So if we're on The Orville, we say ‘Well, what would that black hole look like?' We call Andre, and he's meanwhile advising on Cosmos. So, we have the benefit of the Cosmos team to give us advice, right up to Neil, who we also call for advice on our science fiction show. And that's really a greatbenefitof doing both of them."

While it's doubtful that this little tidbit has kept the show alive, there's no doubt that it has a lot of fans. Though it was trounced by critics, the show did well enough to get a second season and maybe even a third if it keeps this streak with fans going. Only time will tell but avid viewers of the show can now say that Neil deGrasse Tyson helps the show with it's "realism."

The Orville season 2 comes out on December 30 and will premiere on FOX.
