The Orville Season 2 Gets More Episodes, Unlikely for 2018 Release

Despite mixed reviews, Seth McFarlane's The Orville has been greenlit for a second season and it's going to be longer than the first. McFarlane has confirmed that the second season is going to be 14 episodes, a wee bit longer than the first season's 12. The bad news is that we might not be seeing the second season this year, which might be a bummer for sci-fi fans.

Speaking with TV Guide, McFarlane said he went with 14 episodes instead of 22 since he wants to focus on quality over quantity. He said that he wants a number of the episodes to be good and not feel like filler, which some shows tend to trot out when they have more 20 episodes or more.

"I think it's going to be at least 14 [episodes]. That's more than the 12 that made up Season 1, but considerably less than the typical 22-episode order count for broadcast shows, but there's a reason for that. "I'd rather do fewer episodes and have them be better content-wise than do 22 and have them be filler."

That's an admirable thing to do, though some might question his sincerity since he works on a show like Family Guy, which is arguably always filler with a few moments of brilliance thrown in. Still, it looks like McFarlane is taking The Orville a bit more seriously than previous live-action endeavors, so it's definitely going to get a lot of attention from fans.

The Orville season 2 currently has no release date.
