There's an ongoing hoax surrounding beauty product brand Sephora and its Body Butter, Sol de Janeiro, which allegedly contains spider pheromones. Naturally, the Internet has been cautious about buying the skin product for themselves.

This article explores whether Sephora's 'Spider-Kryptonite' body butter rumor is true or just a hoax. So, does the Sephora body butter actually contain pheromones?

Sephora Body Butter: Walking Spider Magnet or Hoax?

The rumor surrounding the Sephora body butter containing spider pheromones began circulating this week, specifically under the subreddit, r/Sephora, when anonymous users shared their reviews on how the scent of Sephora's body butter 'attracts' Wolf Spiders.

Coincidentally, many subreddit users have shared similar experiences of having Wolf Spiders appear out of nowhere the moment they used the product. The review even went as far as describing the product as 'like kryptonite to wolf spiders'.

It doesn't help that a wolf spider appeared to have bitten one of the consumers on the leg upon using the body cream:

Sephora's 'Spider Magnet' Cream Debunked by Expert

According to an expert Arachnologist (via The New York Post), while "there is a remote possibility" that the chemicals Sephora's Sol de Janeiro cream used could seemingly attract wolf spiders, there is little to no evidence behind this 'spider science.'

The expert also explained that the Internet may be a good source of information, but it will not always be accurate. Neither can Reddit posts be considered as concrete research behind the subject.

The 'Spider-Kryptonite' Body Butter Meme Explained

Unsurprisingly, thanks to the discourse over the subject, the 'Spider-Kryptonite' body butter became a meme.

One X user had even compared the phenomenon to how Panera-charged Lemonade 'kills' its users. However, fear not, as the aforementioned Arachnid expert also took note of another potential reason as to why the wolf spider population had grown.

As the Arachnologist expert told The Post, the other possible reason behind the growing mass of wolf spiders' appearances could be the onset of the colder weather as most wolf spiders tend to seek shelter during this time.

It is also worth mentioning that not all subreddit posts are trustworthy on the site, especially since Reddit recently introduced a contributor program in September. Beware of what's out there.
