We already know that Nick Fury and Talos will be back in Marvel's Secret Invasion but there was a time when the Skrull was supposed to bite the dust right after his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Ben Mendelsohn has just revealed that Captain Marvel originally planned for his character's death.
Ben Mendelsohn recently spoke to Collider to promote his new project To Catch a Killer but he also discussed his upcoming MCU series. Interestingly, the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor casually revealed that he didn't expect to return Talos because the character was supposed to be killed off in Captain Marvel.
“He died on page 56,” Mendelsohn said of Talos. He then admitted that he agreed to do the movie because he wanted to work with directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden once again.
“I was doing it because Ryan and Anna had directed Mississippi Grind, which was the first lead I got,” Mendelsohn said.
“They asked me if I’d do it, and I was like, 'Yeah, of course, I’ll do it for you guys.' I have loved being a part of that world,” he added.
We're not sure how it happened but Fleck and Boden somehow decided against killing Talos off in Captain Marvel. Luckily, that means that Ben Mendelsohn will be reunited with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in Secret Invasion.
Mendelsohn also confessed he was thrilled to be brought back in Secret Invasion and praised the cast and crew of the MCU series.
"They’re the best people on Earth, at that company," he said. "They’re the best you’ll ever work for. And the fact that they were going in that direction, I’m very excited about Secret Invasion."
"They’re the best," Mendelsohn continued. "I had a real evolution in understanding the possibilities that lay within the genre. Because of its dominance, I’m so thrilled that they are doing what they do. They’re geniuses with it."
Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ on June 21, 2023.
