Sean Bean on Why Knights of the Zodiac is Different From Other Fantasy Films

There is little doubt that Sean Bean has been part of numerous fantasy franchises that proved to be very successful. However, the former Game of Thrones star says that his latest film Knights of the Zodiac is unique in its own way.

Sean Bean has been cast as Alman Kiddo in Knights of the Zodiac and the Lord of the Rings actor is playing a man who mentors a boy who will eventually become a powerful warrior. Not surprisingly, Bean is proud to be part of the film which is an adaptation of the popular manga Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Sean Bean explained how Knights of the Zodiac is different from other fantasy movies although he wasn't initially familiar with the source material.

"I wasn’t that familiar with Saint Seiya, the Knights of the Zodiac, the kind of history behind it, and how successful and how popular it was in Japan and in certain parts of the world [like] South America and Poland," Bean said.

"But I think what makes this film unique is the fact it’s combined two kinds of elements, which are very interesting to me: Greek mythology – which I was always interested in growing up as a kid – and the Japanese culture, the anime, the manga," he continued.

"Combining those together complements each other very well in the end product. It’s quite fascinating and it’s very exciting," Bean concluded.

Sean Bean also discussed his reunion with GoldenEye co-star Famke Janssen, who plays Guraad in Knights of the Zodiac.

"We were all a bit younger then!" he said with a laugh while referring to the James Bond movie.

"It was good to work with her again. It’s the first time me and Famke really had any scenes together," Bean stated.

"On Bond, we saw each other on set, but we didn’t really have any scenes together. I worked with her on [Don’t Say A Word], had a telephone conversation [scene] and never saw her on that film either!" he added.

"So it was nice to actually have scenes with her and thrash it out in the later scenes in the movie. That was good," Bean said.

Knights of the Zodiac stars Mackenyu, Famke Janssen, Madison Iseman, Diego Tinoco, Mark Dacascos, Nick Stahl, and Sean Bean. The film is currently screening in Japan and will premiere internationally on May 12, 2023.
