After getting an anime film adaptation a few months ago, Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land is also getting an anime series that will be released on Disney+.

The upcoming anime was announced recently via the Sand Land official pages, including the website and X (formerly Twitter) account. Instead of being an entirely new project, this is a series version of the anime film.

This isn’t the only new Sand Land release that’s coming soon though, as Toriyama’s manga series has seen a resurgence in popularity recently.

Akira Toriyama is easily one of the most renowned manga artists ever. This is thanks in large part to Dragon Ball, Toriyama’s legendary manga that became the blueprint of many battle shonen titles.

Aside from Dragon Ball, Toriyama is also known for his gag manga Dr. Slump, as well as for his character art for the Dragon Quest games.

Sand Land is another work by Toriyama that was serialized in Shonen Jump between May and August 2000. It may not be as well-known as his other works, but this manga has seen a resurgence in popularity lately.

The series’ newfound popularity is thanks to the anime film adaptation by Toei Animation that was released in Japanese cinemas back in August.

This film features 3DCG animation, reminiscent of Toei’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

It also features well-known VAs such as Mutsumi Tamura (Kobayashi in Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid) and Kazuhiro Yamaji (Kenny in Attack on Titan).

Along with the film, Bandai Namco is also working on a Sand Land video game adaptation that it is set to release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
