Along with an upcoming anime film, Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land is also getting an action RPG, which was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2023.
The game’s reveal was made via a surprise trailer showcase during the recent video game event.
This trailer wasn’t just a standard teaser though, as it was quite a meaty trailer that showed some gameplay footage.
As with most anime or manga-based video game adaptations, this upcoming title is being developed by Bandai Namco, and it is set to release on modern consoles and PC.
Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land Is Getting the Anime Treatment
Akira Toriyama is a legendary manga creator who is best known for the Dragon Ball franchise. And while Dragon Ball continues to get new projects, one of Toriyama’s lesser-known works is finally getting some love.
A few months ago, it was announced that his manga series Sand Land will get an anime film this Summer, and it’s being made by Sunrise (aka Bandai Namco Filmworks).
Instead of being a TV anime, it was decided that Sand Land will instead be a movie, which makes sense given that the manga is only 14 chapters long.
While the series’ style is unmistakably Toriyama, Sand Land’s premise is a bit different from his other works as it follows the demon Beelzebub as he tries to survive a world where the water supply has long dried up.
From the looks of it, there are big plans for Sand Land as an action RPG that is also being developed to complement the upcoming film.

Sand Land Game Revealed at Summer Game Fest
The upcoming game is simply titled Sand Land, and it was revealed via a new trailer that, while only a minute-and-a-half in length, shows off some interesting gameplay footage.
Aside from the familiar action-RPG combat system that the game seems to have, what’s most interesting about the trailer is that it seems to be an open-world game, with an emphasis on traversal using various vehicles.
It hasn’t been confirmed yet if the game will be an open-world title, but what seems certain is that exploration will be a key aspect of the game.
Akira Toriyama is no stranger to the world of gaming. Aside from the various Dragon Ball games and collabs, Toriyama is also the character designer for iconic RPGs like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger.
There’s no word yet on a release date for the Sand Land RPG, though it is confirmed to release on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
