Rogue One Writer Gary Whitta Talks About The Backlash Against Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have enjoyed critical and commercial success when it premiered in December last year, however the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens ended up becoming of the most divisive films in the Star Wars franchise.

Sure, some might have enjoyed the way the film added on to Star Wars lore and the way the film set the franchise to a new direction, however, some fans didn't quite like the way the film subverted fan expectations.

Now, speaking with the Jedi News, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story screenwriter and The Last Jedi comic book adaptation author Garry Whitta tries to explain the divisiveness of the film. Gushing over the accomplishments of The Last Jedi, Whitta says that those against the film are a group of fans that are actually "a very noisy minority."

"I think what you mean by that when you say 'the fans' is actually 'a very noisy minority of fans,'" Whitta told the publication. "Look, I would not necessarily have made every choice that Rian made because I'm not the same person or writer or fan that he is, but I respect and admire and appreciate and support every choice he did make. The film he wrote is far braver and more mature and more challenging than I could ever have written."

Though there were a lot of fans that appreciated this challenging and mature take on the Star Wars, enjoying the commentary the film made and the changes it brought to the franchise, others wanted a "cool" film. Fans didn't quite like how The Last Jedi turned Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) into a jaded hermit on an island, and they didn't quite like the addition to the lore of the Force.

Because they didn't get what they want, these fans have either been personally attacking Johnson or offering him "constructive criticism" about how the film should have gone. Some have even gone as far as petitioning a remake of The Last Jedi.
