Rian Johnson On All The Hatred Star Wars Fans Have Towards Character Deaths

It looks like Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has a few words for those who don't really like the character deaths in The Force Awakens sequel.

Though it might months after the premiere of The Last Jedi, fans continue to complain about the sequel trilogy installment, ranting about the film's subversion, ranting about the new changes the film brought to the Star Wars franchise, and more importantly, ranting about Luke.

Taking to Twitter, a Star Wars fan going by the name Synchronic Design decided to put up an image of a transcript of a conversation between Star Wars creator George Lucas and the writer Lawrence Kasdan. The conversation had the two debating over killing a character in one of their films – Lucas wanted to keep everyone alive because the galaxy far, far, away was a "fairy tale" and was meant to have a happy ending.

Responding to the post, Johnson decided to counter the logic by sharing pictures of the many character deaths found in the original trilogy.

The Star Wars director also explained what The Last Jedi meant to him, saying that the film "100% distills the spirit and heart of SW." Johnson also defended the film, saying that the new entries in the franchise needed to be personal just the same way the originals were to Lucas.

Sure The Last Jedi had its flaws, but it's pretty hard to deny that the film was emotionally powerful and that it brought the franchise to new directions. Subverting fan expectations, The Force Awakens sequel allowed Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy to explore new territory in the franchise.
