Since Outer Banks Season 3 was not expected to release on Netflix this summer, fans have more time to discuss the show's biggest theories, including the one that claims that Big John Rutledge (Charles Halford), the father of John B. (Chase Stokes), is actually a villain. One of the best parts of Season 2 was the revelation in the finale that John B. Sr. is still alive.
According to a theory by Redditor BoleynFR, John B.'s father may not be as clean-cut as viewers were led to believe. "Part of me thinks Big John might actually be the villain," the theory claims.
Finding out that the supposed victim in OBX could actually be the antagonist would be a compelling plot twist and would easily have viewers on the edge of their seats. Nine months prior to the pilot episode, he went missing at sea and is presumed dead, but his body has never been found. However, John B. is convinced that his father is still alive.
The theory speculates that Big John intends to steal the and the cross, and that John B. would be teaming-up with him to get it while his friends, but after realizing how bad his father is and how Pope's family deserves justice, he switches sides and ends up beating his father.
While this would make for an interesting plot twist, it's unlikely that we'd see another father figure become a villain after we've already seen Sarah Cameron's dad (Charles Esten), but who knows?
In late September 2022, Netflix released the first trailer for Outer Banks Season 3; unfortunately, the trailer didn't reveal any clues that support this theory.
