Orion and the Dark is a new fantasy adventure animated film that’s quite wholesome, if a bit confusing. Thus, many viewers may want to have the Orion and the Dark ending explained.

Even though it seems like an easy-to-digest movie, the fact that it’s written by Charlie Kaufman should clue viewers in. After all, Kaufman is the mind behind labyrinthine titles like Anomalisa and I’m Thinking of Ending Things.

While Kung Fu Panda 4 may be DreamWorks Animation's most anticipated upcoming series, the studio released Orion and the Dark today, and it’s just as big of a must-watch, especially for those looking for something new.

This film follows Orion (Jacob Tremblay), an 11-year-old boy who is afraid of pretty much everything, though his biggest anxiety is the dark. Unluckily for Orion, he meets the personification of the Dark (Paul Walter Hauser).

Instead of being a fearsome monster, Dark is far from evil. Thus, the two go on an adventure to help Orion face his fears of the unknown, all while meeting other concepts like Sleep and Quiet a la Inside Out.

It turns out that this is actually a bedtime story that’s being told by an adult Orion to his daughter, Hypatia (Mia Akemi Brown).

In typical Kaufman fashion, the story soon blurs reality and fiction as Hypatia joins the young Orion’s adventure.

Because of its twists and turns, some viewers may be wondering what exactly happened during the film’s ending.

By the end of the movie, Dark bids adieu to Orion and Hypatia, though they’re stuck with the fact that Hypatia is seemingly stuck 20 years in the past with the young version of her father.

Thankfully, Tycho comes to the rescue to transport Hypatia 20 years into the future – her present timeline. Tycho is Hypatia’s son and Orion’s grandson.

In a flash-forward, Hypatia is shown telling the same bedtime story to Tycho, which Tycho adds to by mentioning his supposed time travel shenanigans. The film then ends with Orion on a movie date with his crush.

The film doesn’t exactly explain if Orion’s bedtime story and the time travel shenanigans actually happened or if it was just part of an elaborate multi-generation bedtime story.

Whatever the case is in this new Charlie Kaufman tale, the film does get wrapped up nicely in terms of the development of its characters.
