It seems that Netflix is beginning to ramp up the One Piece promotion. After Oda released his recent personal message to fans, Netflix shared a guide featuring the One Piece live-action staff, explaining how to pronounce 'Luffy.'

For long-time One Piece fans, this might seem obvious, especially as the anime has been saying Luffy’s name for decades now.

But there are still plenty of people who haven’t seen the anime, so this guide is made for them.

One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy is easily one of the most iconic characters in anime, to the point that even most people who don’t read or watch the series know about or are at least familiar with Luffy.

But what they might not know is the proper pronunciation of his name. Some people might pronounce his name as "luh-fee", which makes sense given how the word "scruffy" is pronounced.

That is not the case though nor is it "luff-aye" or any other pronunciation. Here’s the guide:

So, there you have it, Luffy’s name is pronounced "loo-fee." Again, this might be obvious, but it’s cool to see it get addressed, especially by the cast.

Interestingly, this video features the five main stars of the live-action show, including Iñaki Godoy (Luffy), Mackenyu (Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Gibson (Usopp), and Taz Skylar (Sanji).

While we’ve seen Godoy promote the show before, this video is significant as it is the first video appearance by Mackenyu in a One Piece promotional video.

While Mackenyu’s face was shown in the initial cast reveal back in 2021, this is our first look at Mackenyu as part of Netflix’s promotion.

Other cast members have either appeared in some promotion or have posted some behind-the-scenes photos and videos of themselves. Mackenyu is the only one who has yet to appear.

Finally, Mackenyu has appeared in a video, though we might have to wait a bit longer before we see him as Zoro.

Though this will possibly happen after promotions are done for the live-action Saint Seiya movie.

With this pronunciation guide, coupled with Oda’s letter, it’s likely that Netflix will give fans more info on the upcoming live-action series soon. Hopefully, a teaser trailer is shown in the coming weeks or months.

The One Piece live-action show will be released sometime in 2023.
