It’s been years now since the live-action adaptation was announced, and finally, Netflix has given us our first proper look at the live-action One Piece series and revealed its 2023 release plan.
While Netflix has yet to release a proper trailer, the streaming giant did share two key visuals for the series, giving us a look at Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Crew. The new visual also comes with a 2023 release confirmation.
One Piece Live-Action: First Look at Straw Hat Crew
The show began filming early last year, with creator Eiichiro Oda even visiting the set.
While we got a behind-the-scenes look at one of the anime’s sets, Netflix hasn’t given any new updates about the show since then.
Now though, Netflix has put up the show’s official page on its website, and it features a special visual that shows Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, albeit from the back.
While we have yet to see the faces of the Straw Hat Crew members, this first look is already quite promising.
After all, fans feared that the main cast’s designs will be changed in live-action. Thankfully, this isn’t the case.
The new visual shows manga-accurate costumes for the Straw Hat Crew, with the notable exception being Luffy’s footwear, as he’s wearing shoes instead of sandals in the image.
Based on the image, Sanji and Zoro seem to have gotten bigger in the live-action, with Zoro in particular having massive shoulders. Though this is fitting given that he canonically has the biggest chest in the manga.
Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action Series Release Date
Live-action anime adaptations have mostly been disappointing for fans. But it seems that many One Piece fans are cautiously optimistic about this series.
For starters, while some jokingly called out Luffy’s new footwear, many are happy to see that there are minimal changes to the Straw Hat Crew’s outfits.
The fact that Oda himself is involved is also a sign that this might be a good adaptation.
Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out, as Netflix confirmed that the live-action One Piece series will release in 2023.
Given Netflix’s typical promotion strategy, we might see the show get released as early as mid-2023. This was also the date mentioned by leakers previously.
However, we still have to wait and see, as the show’s release might also be pushed to late 2023. At least, we don’t need to wait until next year to see it.
