Netflix is continuing to hype up the upcoming One Piece live-action series. And in what is great news for long-time series fans, it was confirmed that the One Piece live-action’s Japanese dub will feature the original Japanese voice cast from the anime.

The return of the Japanese anime cast was announced at Anime Expo 2023. Specifically, Netflix revealed this via the streaming platform’s panel at the event yesterday, July 2.

To go along with the announcement, Netflix also released a special video featuring Iñaki Godoy as he meets the original Luffy VA from the anime.

Anime Expo 2023 already saw lots of big reveals, including highly anticipated ones like the new Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 4 trailer.

Though Netflix also shared big news for One Piece with the reveal of the Japanese voice dub cast.

This was celebrated with a sweet video where Iñaki Godoy met Mayumi Tanaka, the iconic VA of Luffy from the anime’s Japanese dub.

In the video, Godoy shared his love for the One Piece anime and for Luffy.

Tanaka then revealed that this meeting was a surprise as Godoy appeared while she was recording the lines for the live-action show’s Japanese dub.

Tanaka also funnily remarked that Godoy is young enough to be her grandson. After all, she has been voicing Luffy in the anime since 1999 – that’s well over 20 years ago.

She also praised Godoy’s performance in the show based on what she’s seen so far during the dubbing sessions.

One Piece Anime Original Cast to Voice the Live-Action Japanese Dub

While Tanaka was the only one of the original cast to appear in Netflix’s announcement video, she is not the only returning cast member.

Joining Tanaka are the other Straw Hat Crew voice actors, including Kazuya Nakai (Zoro), Akemi Okamura (Nami), Kappei Yamaguchi (Usopp), and Hiroaki Hirata (Sanji).

Though the main cast members are returning, it wasn’t revealed if the other cast members from the anime will also return for the live-action series.

Meanwhile, it was also revealed that Iñaki Godoy and Taz Skylar will voice their characters Luffy and Sanji, respectively for the show’s Spanish dub.

The One Piece live-action series will stream exclusively on Netflix beginning August 31, 2023.
