DC's Nightwing Movie Receives Disappointing Update

Years before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC franchise and the establishment of DC Studios, numerous film projects were in the works as part of the DCEU with plans to have the fan-favorite heroes in the comics finally getting their due on the big screen.

One of the projects that were in development is a Nightwing movie with The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay attached to helm the film. However, ever since it was announced, there has been a lack of updates regarding its progress.

Now that DC Studios is moving forward with a new iteration of the franchise, some fans are wondering whether the Nightwing movie will still happen and possibly be retooled to be integrated into the DCU.

Nightwing Movie is No Longer in the Works

According to TheWrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez on X, Chris McKay's Nightwing movie is no longer in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Studios. He confirmed its status in response to a fan post about the project.

"That project is dead," he wrote in his post.

Since Gunn and Safran took over the DC franchise, we have seen an exodus of projects from the previous management that were shelved and supposed to be part of the soon-to-end DCEU.

It's not surprising that the Nightwing project ended up getting the same fate, but there is also a likelihood that Gunn has his own plans for the character in the DCU which is why he didn't consider integrating it into the new franchise.

While the project might be dead, fans could still anticipate the possibility that the character will become part of the DCU since he has become a fan favorite for years and it feels inevitable that he will also get his due on the big screen at some point.

At this point, we know that DC Studios is working on The Brave and The Bold film and they're planning to include the Bat-Family which could have Nightwing as part of the group. Perhaps that is where the character will make an appearance in the DCU.
