New Star Wars Film Features More Major Characters Than You Think, Dave Filoni Teases

Dave Filoni continues to expand the universe of Star Wars by creating more animated and live-action TV shows for Disney and Lucasfilm.

At Star Wars Celebration Europe in London, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy announced that Dave Filoni has a Star Wars film in mind that will focus on the New Republic.

Set to make interconnected stories in the major franchise, his Star Wars project will include The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and even the animated series, The Clone Wars and Rebels.

That’s not all, though. In case you were wondering, Filoni has just teased he is set to bring in more original Star Wars characters from comic books and games!

Previously, Kennedy teased that since Filoni has seen the inside and out of Star Wars storytelling over 20 years, “There are a lot of sources he’s drawing from to see where we’re going.”

“We’re in the right area code. We are definitely in the right space.” Filoni said in a new interview on EW’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast.

“I think it’s going to be a clamoring of characters saying, ‘How do I get in this picture?’ And that’s what Jon [Favreau] and I have been figuring out.”

“When I was younger, we didn’t have movies, but there were comic books, there were novels, things that are encompassed in the [expanded universe] or Legends,” Jon Favreau shared.

“Clearly, there are decisions that have to be made to fit it all together,” Favreau added, “But, for us, I think one thing we’re in agreement about is that the characters — as special as they are — the story has to drive what characters are.”

Only then did Filoni weigh in on their process of which characters are bound to be included in the film:

“You [have to] start really mapping things out and figure out what that story is, and then have those characters fulfill what their growth cycle is and what their mythic hero’s journey is.” Filoni said.

“Those things have to fit together well. Otherwise, it won’t feel like Star Wars.”

The Star Wars: New Republic Movie is still in development.
