Following its announcement at AnimeJapan back in March, Netflix released a new trailer for the Ooku: The Inner Chambers anime that revealed its June release date.
This upcoming anime is an interesting one for many reasons, one of which is its all-star staff.
Aside from being based on a manga by a renowned artist, a popular anime director is also at this series’ helm.
Plus, the show’s unique premise featuring gender-bent figures in Japanese history sets it apart from other historical shows.
Netflix’s Ooku Is a Unique Edo Period Anime
Of course, it’s unfair to say that this is just another gender-bending anime similar to shows like Ayakashi Triangle. That’s because it’s an interesting look at the Edo Period courtesy of the original manga’s creator, Fumi Yoshinaga.
Yoshinaga is a well-regarded manga artist who has worked on popular slice-of-life titles, including Flower of Life and What Did You Eat Yesterday?
As for the anime, it is being made by Studio Deen, the long-running anime studio that’s best known for works such as the classic Ranma ½, as well as newer shows like Sasaki and Miyano.
As for its story, Ooku: The Inner Chambers is set in an alternate version of Edo Period Japan. Here, a mysterious plague killed off a vast number of the male population.
Soon, this resulted in the social order shifting from being male to being female-dominated. This meant that women took over important positions in the government, including the Shogun.
The series features several real-world Japanese figures that are male, but in Ooku, they are replaced by women. Well-known female historical figures have also been changed to men.

Ooku: The Inner Chambers Release Date Revealed
Along with the series’ interesting setting, the Ooku anime also has a star-studded voice cast.
The series’ cast members include Mamoru Miyano (Light in Death Note), Yuki Kaji (Eren in Attack on Titan), and Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch in Code Geass), among others.
Also worth noting is that the anime is directed by Noriyuki Abe, a well-known figure in the industry as he has worked on iconic titles such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
Ooku: The Inner Chambers will be released exclusively on Netflix on June 29, 2023. Though there’s no word yet on how many episodes the series will have.
Unlike some shows that Netflix only has distribution rights to, this series is a Netflix production in the same vein as anime like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
