Even before the show’s upcoming premiere, the One Piece live-action series is already the exception among pretty much every live-action anime adaptation.

The excitement for the series is at an all-time high ahead of its release tomorrow. This is based on the reactions from fans on social media as well as the recent in-person events across the world.

This stands in sharp contrast to other live-action anime adaptations which are usually met with trepidation.

While anime was considered a niche back in the 90s or the 2000s, it is very much mainstream at this point. After all, even general audiences are familiar with titles like Spy x Family or Demon Slayer.

Given anime’s popularity, there have been numerous attempts at making live-action adaptations.

For the most part, these adaptations are panned by critics and fans. A prime example of this is Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop.

Because anime live-action adaptations are often of suspect quality, fans are typically wary of any new live-action project. But that’s not the case with the One Piece live-action series.

It’s a bit early to say as most fans around the world haven’t seen it yet, but early reactions to the screenings are highly positive.

Of course, you’ll want to take these with a grain of salt as it’s better to let the hype cool off a bit.

Still, there’s a lot of excitement for the series based on the reactions to Netflix’s various promotional videos and posts online.

One reason for this is that the show looks promising visually. But arguably, the bigger reason is the series creator’s involvement.

Other live-action anime adaptations are often made without direct feedback from their creators. But One Piece is different as Eiichiro Oda is heavily involved in the show’s production.

Aside from being ever-present in Netflix’s promotion via messages (and even an appearance alongside Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy), Oda has mentioned multiple times that the show has no compromises and that the staff followed his vision.

As such, if there’s any live-action anime adaptation that might become a huge hit, it’s One Piece. This is based on the initial reactions, the various promotions, and Oda’s heavy involvement.

However, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow before we find out as the One Piece live-action series will be released exclusively on Netflix on August 31, 2023.
