With the show’s release happening later this month, Netflix finally released an English-subtitled trailer for the live-action Kimi ni Todoke series.
Based on the popular manga/anime series of the same name, this Kimi ni Todoke live-action show is the newest in Netflix’s increasing number of Japanese original titles.
In this case, "original" doesn’t mean it has an original story as it instead refers to shows that are produced fully or in part by Netflix.
In this case, Netflix is co-producing the series alongside TV Tokyo.
Netflix Live-Action Japanese Shows
While Netflix became known for its American-made original titles like Stranger Things, the last couple of years have seen the streaming giant expand its original offerings to include shows made from all over the world.
For instance, some of Netflix’s recent big hits include Money Heist, a Spanish-language TV series.
Meanwhile, the 2021 phenomenon Squid Game was made in Korea and soon became a global hit.
Netflix has also increased its original Japanese content. One of the biggest examples of this is Alice in Borderland, which recently released its second season in late December.
Aside from Alice, Netflix also has a wide range of other Japanese shows, including titles like The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, First Love, and The Naked Director, among others.
Given that Japanese content also has a big fanbase spread throughout the world, it makes sense that Netflix is increasing its original content in this field on top of its already big focus on anime.

Kimi ni Todoke English-Subtitled Trailer
Kimi ni Todoke is a clear example of this strategy. Aside from being a series aimed at J-Drama fans, it also targets anime fans as the anime series that it’s based on was a huge hit when it began airing in the late 2000s.
Initially, the show was only being promoted in Japan. Now, Netflix is also keen on pushing the show internationally as an English-subtitled trailer has been released.
The trailer also previews the opening song, Ai no Uta, (or Love Song) by Takaya Kawasaki. Check it out here:
Based on the responses to the trailer, many fans of the original anime and manga are excited to see this new take on the series.
Though, as many noted, this isn’t the first live-action adaptation as there was a feature film released in 2010.
Officially titled From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke, the series will premiere on Netflix worldwide on March 30, 2023.
