In My Happy Marriage, Miyo’s mother is known as Sumi Usuba. Not much is known about her in the early volumes of the series, but one thing is certain: she looks exactly like her daughter and has the same compassionate and empathetic heart as Miyo.

Even Sumi's personal life is a mystery, as the real identity of Miyo's father is still undetermined.

Sumi became pregnant with either Shinichi Saimori or the so-called Founder of the Gifted Communion, Naoshi Usui, whom viewers will not be able to see in the anime, at least for the time being.

Sumi Usuba was born at a time when Dream Sight and gift-user births were declining, much to the delight of the entire Usuba clan. She was a frail young girl but she was blessed with the ability to telepathize.

Telepathy is a supernatural ability that connects one person's heart to another's. It could be used to express thoughts in one's head and feelings in one's heart without using verbal or bodily communication channels.

The Usuba clan hoped Sumi's awakening to the gift of telepathy would result in the birth of a child with Dream Sight. According to records, the mothers of those endowed with Dream Sight had telepathy regardless of skill level.

Most importantly, Dream Sight users are only born every few decades, and there has never been a single case where a person with the ability passed it on to the next generation, making Sumi even more indispensable to the clan.

As a result, Sumi was subjected to enormous pressure from her clan at such a young age.

She had to deal with a lot of unreasonable expectations, which is why Sumi decided to seal her own child's gift. She did not want Miyo to go through the same thing.

However, Sumi's actions reduced Miyo's societal value after she died. Nobody wanted Miyo in the Saimori household, and she had a miserable life until she was engaged to Kiyoka Kudou.

Miyo's mother made a sacrifice for the betterment of the Usuba clan. Despite her father's objections, she forced her family to marry her off to Shinichi Saimori in order to protect the clan.

Following generations of consanguineous marriages to preserve the clan's gift, Sumi Usuba became the first woman to marry outside the clan.

The reason for this is that the Usuba family's head did not want another family to profit from their supernatural ability.

The Usuba clan was in crisis at the time, and the emperor, Prince Takaihito's father, plotted to weaken the entire clan.

The emperor was afraid of the Usubas because he believed that Dream Sight was far greater and more powerful than his own gift, the Divine Revelation.

The emperor feared that if Sumi married another member of the Usuba clan, they would have a child with thick Usuba blood. The more Usuba blood the child possesses, the stronger he or she will become.

The emperor became concerned that the Usubas would be able to depose him. To avoid this, the emperor did everything he could to exploit the Usuba clan through the Saimori household.

He revealed the Usubas' power to the Saimoris and even gave them a large sum of money to help the Usubas financially.

Furthermore, Prince Takaihito revealed that the emperor was responsible for the Usubas' economic downturn. It was true that the Usuba family had fallen on hard times and could barely support themselves.

Sumi was supposed to marry another member of the clan, but she chose to marry Shinichi Saimori instead.

She eventually gives birth to Miyo and decides to conceal her daughter's Dream Sight in order to convince everyone, including the emperor, that her daughter does not have a gift.

Sadly, Sumi died of natural causes, which coincided with the decline of the Usuba clan.

Sumi, Miyo's mother, has yet to appear in My Happy Marriage. Since her death, she has only appeared in the series to visit Miyo in her dreams.

She appears in Miyo's nightmares most of the time, but in one vision, Miyo sees her younger mother conversing with a younger man she recognizes as Naoshi Usui.

This led her to believe that their relationship is more than meets the eye.

Miyo wonders if Naoshi is her father because the two appeared to have a very close relationship in her dream.

This could explain Shinichi Saimori's lack of concern for her, despite the fact that she is his firstborn child.

Sumi may have left the Usuba clan to pursue Naoshi prior to her marriage to Shinichi, but we can only speculate for the time being, just like Miyo and Kiyoka in the series.
