Mulan Being Released on Disney+ Could Mean the End for Cinemas

There is little doubt that people are divided when it comes to Disney's decision to release Mulan on its streaming service. Although the move assures that the live-action adaptation of the animated classic will finally get its long-awaited premiere, some are also worried that it could mean the death of cinema.

Mulan was initially set to premiere in March and would have been a huge part of Disney's plan to dominate the Chinese box office earlier this year. Unfortunately, theaters all over the world needed to be closed down due to the coronavirus outbreak. Although the release date has been moved to a later date, this was ultimately cancelled as COVID-19 cases surged once again. The only thing that Disney could do is to decide to make the film available on VOD on Disney+ next month.

So what could this mean for the future of cinema? This is certainly a risky move for Disney since there is a good chance that the movie will not rake in millions over its $29.99 price tag. On the other hand, the success of Mulan's digital release could also make other studios decide to skip theaters altogether in the future. Sadly, this could mean that people will now have the option of watching major blockbusters in the comfort of their own home and not have to pay for overpriced popcorn.

For now, Mulan is the only major title that's getting a digital release. However, this could change after the premiere on September 4.

Do you think Mulan's possible success will lead to a major change in how people will watch movies in the future? Sound off in the comments below.
