To celebrate his latest film’s release, NHK released a new Hayao Miyazaki documentary that chronicled his creation of The Boy and the Heron. The documentary’s ending also saw Miyazaki return to a familiar world, sparking hopes for a new Nausicaa movie.

NHK’s new program did not explicitly mention that Miyazaki will make a sequel, but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited about the prospect.

That’s because some are thinking that the documentary is hinting at a new Nausicaa movie.

The legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki has been the subject of several documentaries before. Now, NHK released another titled 2399 days with Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli.

This documentary is 80 minutes long, and it chronicles Miyazaki’s work on The Boy and the Heron. Because of the in-depth look at the anime maestro’s creative approach, the documentary is a must-see for Ghibli fans.

Aside from his work on Heron, Miyazaki is also shown at the end drawing a familiar face for Ghibli fans. While creating the artwork, Miyazaki remarked, “how it’s a pain, coming back to this world.”

Miyazaki didn’t talk about this new painting, but it’s clear to viewers that it features Nausicaa from his first original anime film project.

Before this ending scene, The Boy and the Heron animation director Takeshi Honda mentioned that Miyazaki “couldn’t stand to be bored” and that he might work on another project.

This quote, combined with the fact that Miyazaki is shown working on a Nausicaa artwork has resulted in many fans buzzing for a potential sequel.

Following the documentary’s release, many Japanese Ghibli fans on Twitter remarked that the final scene may have just implied that a new Nausicaa movie would be Miyazaki’s next film.

Of course, this is all just speculation, especially as Miyazaki’s next work hasn’t been confirmed. The discussions are mostly among Japanese fans for now, as the documentary isn’t available in English.

It might not be too surprising if he does work on this next, especially as a Ghibli executive also revealed previously that Miyazaki is already making plans for another project.

If a new Nausicaa film is indeed his next work, this will mark the first proper sequel from Studio Ghibli.

In the meantime, fans can watch The Boy and the Heron, which is still screening in US cinemas.
