It’s widely believed that Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film will be his last, but that seems to not be the case. Recently, Studio Ghibli Vice President Junichi Nishioka revealed that Hayao Miyazaki will not yet retire after The Boy and the Heron and that he might have another film coming up.
This was revealed by Nishioka at the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet where Miyazaki’s film had its international debut.
The latest development is an exciting one for many fans, especially as many expected the legendary anime director to finally retire for good.
Some Believe The Boy and the Heron Is Miyazaki’s Last Movie
Hayao Miyazaki is arguably the most iconic anime film director, having created many notable works like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and more.
In 2013, Miyazaki released The Wind Rises, a film that was initially going to be his last as he retired following its theatrical run. However, as with many creators, Miyazaki emerged from retirement shortly after.
Since then, Miyazaki has been hard at work on his next film titled The Boy and the Heron (or How Do You Live? in Japan).
It may have taken a while, but the film was finally released in Japan last July.
Miyazaki is already 82 years old and many thought that this was his actual retirement film. This makes sense considering that he has already worked tirelessly on movies for decades now.
However, it seems that Miyazaki is not quite done yet, as mentioned by Ghibli’s VP, who revealed that he already has some ideas for his next movie.

Studio Ghibli VP Says Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron Is Not His Final Film
Ghibli VP Nishioka revealed this on the red carpet when asked by CBC about Miyazaki’s plans after The Boy and the Heron’s theatrical run.
Nishioka specifically mentioned that Miyazaki comes into the office every day and continues to work on ideas for a new film.
There’s no info yet on what exactly his potential next film will be about, but it’s likely to have a historic setting based on his two previous films.
That’s not to say that Miyazaki’s next film is confirmed. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Ghibli in that regard.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to the upcoming North American release of The Boy and the Heron later this year.
