Mission: Impossible Director “Cured” From Wanting To Direct A Star Wars Film Because Of Fan Harassment

The opportunity to direct a Star Wars film might be a huge honor to any filmmaker in the Hollywood industry, but it looks like the toxicity of the Star Wars fanbase is forcing some directors to steer away from Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far, away. That includes Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation's director, Christopher McQuarrie.

Talking to social media during the anniversary of the death of The Twilight Zone host Rod Serling, McQuarrie decided to share a tribute post praising the different ways the groundbreaking science-fiction icon injected social commentary into the show's stories.

However, one Twitter user replied to the filmmaker's post, saying that the "Social Justice Warrior" agenda ought to be removed from fiction. This response brought in The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson to defend McQuarrie's post. In the end, the discourse became a long and angry exchange between quite a number of rabid Star Wars fans.

Seeing what Johnson's been going through, McQuarrie told the director that after five minutes of all the hate and toxicity, he doesn't understand why the Star Wars filmmaker would still stay on Twitter and that while he would have "loved to make a Star Wars film someday," he's already cured out of his wishes.

It's such a shame that the behavior of the fanbase would turn off a great director as McQuarrie. But seeing the interaction on Twitter, it's definitely not difficult to understand why rabid Star Wars fans are turning him off. A lot of the Star Wars fanbase has grown some sense of entitlement over the franchise, and some continue to hold on to backward ideas like keeping female heroes out of Star Wars.

What do you think? Is the Star Wars fanbase growing more toxic? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
