Minions will Actually Play a Part in Peter Jackson's Mortal Engines

The new trailer for Peter Jackson's Mortal Engines has just dropped, and it's high time that people started getting excited for it. The film is set in a dystopian future, and surprisingly, it has some pop culture references appearing in the moving city of London. One of them is (annoyingly) the minions from Despicable Me.

According to ScreenRant, the film will have a scene where we get to see a museum in London, and in a display dubbed "Deities of Lost America," there are three giant models of the minions—specifically Stuart, Kevin, and Bob from the spinoff Minions movie.

In the original source book, there were also some cartoon characters that were mistaken as religious figures, and the original "deities" were supposed to be Mickey Mouse and Goofy. Seeing that those characters aren't owned by Universal, it would make sense that they would use popular characters that were already at hand.

Though I wish Jackson would have picked a different reference in the film instead, I'm sure that people will still get a laugh out of seeing people think that these minions were religious figures. I bet it would be funnier if there was an entire religion based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books. Then again, it might be too on the nose for Jackson.

Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

Mortal Engines comes out Dec. 14.
