True Detective has returned for its fourth season with Jodie Foster as its lead character. Aside from a stellar cast and a highly praised storyline, True Detective: Night Country dominates with its soundtrack. In Episode 4, a track from American rock group Mazzy Star has proven itself a great pick for such a pivotal moment in the show.

Let's talk about why this song is trending alongside the series.

Avid fans of the show were shocked to hear Mazzy Star in True Detective: Night Country. Although the rock band has some noteworthy hits from the 90s, the decision to add the song, Into Dust, at such an important moment in the series was a bit spontaneous.

In True Detective: Night Country, Mazzy Star's Into Dust song plays in episode four. It's during the scene when the family of Peter Prior (played by Finn Bennett) and Leah Danvers (played by Isabella LaBlanc) are preparing dinner.

But as Liz Danvers (played by Jodie Foster) browses through Annie's (played by Nivi Pedersen) video, she discovers new leads in the case they're investigating.

Despite the time, Peter is told to go and pay a visit to Oliver Tagaq (played by Lance Karmer).

While many can't help but enjoy this particular song choice, IndieWire says this was "borderline illegal" since this song is owned by The O.C.

For The O.C. fans who are watching True Detective: Night Country, Into Dust felt out of place.

Into Dust is a song from Mazzy Star and is part of their second album entitled So Tonight That I Might See. The song has a hollow feel to it, which is produced by the acoustic guitar and cello heard throughout the song.

As shared by SongFacts, this song is about "losing yourself in someone else."

Hope Sandoval, lead singer of Mazzy Star, wrote the lyrics of the song with instrumentalist, David Roback. Although Sandoval didn't say much about the lyrics, many couldn't help but point out it reflected her relationship with guitarist William Reid.

In an interview with Goldmine (via The Guardian), Reid said: "I was in love with Hope, but it was the unhappiest time in my life."

Sandoval also said that she never got to write down the song lyrics. But when Roback started playing the guitar, the words of the song came to her.

Although it gained fame after getting featured three times in The O.C., Into Dust was also used in The Handmaid's Tale, Charmed, and House.
