Matt Reeves Explains Joker's Mysterious Inclusion in The Batman

The Batman is Matt Reeves' latest interpretation of the classic DC caped crusader. Featuring Robert Pattinson as the new Bruce Wayne, who is also the first actor to play a version of the DC superhero outside the DCEU. The Batman centers on the titular character's second year of fighting crimes in Gotham City, as he tracks down the brilliant serial killer, The Riddler (Paul Dano). One month after the film's theatrical release, The Batman surprisingly crossed $750 Million at the global box office, officially passing 2016's DC highest-grossing film, Suicide Squad.

At The Batman's ending, just when we thought Bruce Wayne's tale was over, there is a scene where Paul Dano's Riddler was spotted talking to a mysterious inmate in Arkham Asylum who offered to be the serial killer's friend, and when the credits finally rolled, the inmate was named as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner." While the inmate remains unknown, one distinctive laugh is all it takes for viewers to identify the mysterious character, and that is no other than Joker, played by Barry Keoghan.

Following the film's release, Matt Reeves shocked fans when he released a deleted scene, featuring Batman's visit to Joker in Arkham Asylum.

Now, fans are wondering why the deleted scene featuring the incredible interaction of Batman and Joker was scrapped, and instead kept Riddler and Joker's interaction in the film.

Thankfully, The Batman director Matt Reeves finally has an answer. In the director's commentary for The Batman, Reeves revealed why he left the mysterious scene in the film, despite lacking any references pointing out to the Joker. Reeves explained, “A lot of people ask me, ‘Is this a set up for another movie?’ and to be honest it really isn’t. This for me was tracking because Paul and The Riddler was in the action of the third act in a very particular way, and the last we’d seen him he was saying ‘Boom!’ in his window as the bombs went off, and we hadn’t yet seen him take in the fact that Batman had been able to pull things back from the brink and that his plan had not played out, I really wanted to see the end of that arc for Riddler.”

With Reeves' comment about the scene not directly aiming at a sequel, it solidifies Selina Kyle's (Zoë Kravitz) final line about Gotham never being able to change while also giving the viewers a hint on what's next for Matt Reeves' Bat-Verse. Despite Reeves' decision to take on a long break after The Batman, several spin-offs centered on Reeve's Batverse are officially confirmed to come in HBO Max.

The initial Gotham PD Batman spin-off was scrapped and developed into an Arkham Asylum series, where two serial killers are being kept. Aside from that, Colin Farrell's The Penguin is also getting a standalone spin-off, as the new mastermind of Gotham's Criminal Elite.

For now, while waiting for the said spin-offs, we can first catch up with The Batman, now streaming on HBO Max.
