Marvel's Avengers finally has an official ESRB rating and it's exactly what you think it is but with a very minor twist. The game will be getting a very safe T for Teen rating, which is probably what Square Enix wanted since they know kids love The Avengers and want to play video games as them. This is mostly fine since we doubt anyone wanted an Avengers game filled with blood, gore, and anime titties.
It was the ESRB who confirmed the rating, acknowledging that it will have melee combat, screams of pain, and the word "shit." That's right, Marvel Games is putting on their big boy pants by allowing a swear word. Ain't that great? In all seriousness, some swearing is fine since there's quite a few in the PG-13 MCU movies and it's better than Mister Negative calling Norman Osborn a "piece of scum" in Marvel's Spider-Man.
This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the roles of the Avengers battling an evil corporation. From a third-person perspective, players engage in a variety of combat missions using each character's weapons/abilities; characters use melee combat (e.g., punches, kicks, throws, smashes), pistols and machine guns, lasers, thrown projectiles (e.g., hammer, shield, rock) to defeat enemies. Combat can be frenetic, with frequent explosions, cries of pain, and gunfire. The word "sh*t" is heard in the game.
We didn't expect anything more for Marvel's Avengers ESRB rating, to be honest. That's not a bad thing since nobody wants an edgy "adult" take on these characters. We're fine with good satire shows like The Boys, thank you very much.
Marvel's Avengers is slated for a September 4 release on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
