Margot Robbie Had Zero Faith in Barbie Movie Coming To Fruition

When early reports began circulating about a Barbie movie being made in development, let’s be honest, the internet did not know where to begin on the idea of making one in the first place. But it is worth mentioning that the film is helmed by Lady Bird and Little Women Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig.

In fact, Margot Robbie, who is set to debut as the titular doll, shared her initial reaction to the Barbie script, indicating that it would have been a shame if their film did not come to fruition.

“The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, “Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day because they are never going to let us make this movie.”” Robbie admitted in a recent interview with BAFTA, “But they did.”

When being asked if she could share any significant thing or plot secret about the film, the DC star zipped her mouth and said, “Can’t tell ya.”

The Barbie script earned high praises ahead of its teaser trailer release, and one of them happened to be from Will Ferrell, who will be starring in the film as the CEO of Mattel: “It’s a loving homage to the brand and at the same time, couldn’t be more satirical. Boy, when I read it, I was like, ‘This is fantastic.’”

There is no denying that even director Gerwig herself had some firsthand doubts on the film being made at all when she started: “It was terrifying. It felt like a vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you begin? What would be the story?” Eventually, the director realized she still wanted to push through, in spite of the risks of the film being her ‘career-ender’.

Margot Robbie’s Barbie plot synopsis reads: “After being expelled from Barbieland for being a less than perfect-looking doll, Barbie sets off for the human world to find true happiness.” You can now watch the teaser trailer below:
