To celebrate the studio’s 50th anniversary, a 4K remaster of Perfect Blue will be screened this August alongside other Madhouse anime movie and TV series classics.

This screening event was announced by Madhouse recently, and it will take place at Shin-Bungeiza in Ikebukuro in Tokyo. There, eight anime titles will be screened for fans.

Though it may not be as talked about as other popular anime studios today such as MAPPA or Wit Studio, Madhouse is still one of the most well-known anime companies in Japan, and it continues to be active today.

Just recently, Madhouse worked on the hit romantic comedy Loving Yamada at Lv999!, and it is also working on the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

Madhouse is arguably best known for its various classic shows, especially the works of Satoshi Kon, one of the most renowned auteurs in the industry.

While two of Kon’s movies are the highlight of the upcoming special screening, the event will also feature two beloved Madhouse shows and other films.

The screening’s complete lineup includes:

  • Perfect Blue
  • Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom
  • A Place Further than the Universe (Episodes 1-6)
  • Paprika
  • REDLINE
  • Goodbye, Don Glees!
  • Chihayafuru (Episodes 1-5)
  • Your Voice -KIMIKOE-

The Madhouse Anniversary screening will be held from August 26-27, 2023.

Screening times for each movie and show, as well as ticket information, can be found on the event’s website.

The Madhouse special screening’s lineup is impressive as it mixes some popular titles like Chihayafuru with more niche picks like REDLINE.

Though it’s fair to say that Perfect Blue is one of the main highlights of the screening lineup.

While there’s another popular Satoshi Kon film in Paprika, the event will screen the Perfect Blue 4K remaster.

Even in its original form, Perfect Blue is already an all-time classic given its dark themes and reality-bending presentation of its main character’s dilemma.

Given that it’s a major highlight, the film will be screened on both the 26th and the 27th, giving anime fans in Japan more screening times to choose from.

Sadly, there’s no word on whether Madhouse will also release the 4K remaster in cinemas in the US following this screening.

But fans can at least buy the Blu-ray English release which was released a few years ago by GKIDS.
