It has been a few months since the end of Season 2, and now, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is confirmed to get an anime sequel.

The follow-up to Made in Abyss’ second season was revealed recently via the show’s official Twitter account. There, it was revealed that the story will continue in anime form, but there’s no info yet on whether it’s a new season or a movie.

Though based on what was shared in the announcement, fans already have theories about what to expect.

It may not have a massive fanbase like shonen anime titles but Made in Abyss has a strong following thanks to its unique premise and memorable world.

The anime began with the first season which aired back in the Summer of 2017. It was then followed up with the anime film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020.

There was a long gap between the two seasons as the manga source material is published on an irregular schedule, meaning it took some time before there were enough manga chapters to be adapted.

Made in Abyss’ first season followed Riko and Reg as they journeyed through the first four layers of the Abyss.

The movie then showed them alongside Nanachi as they journeyed through the fifth layer, the domain of Bondrewd.

While The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is considered the show’s second season, it is a follow-up to the movie’s story as it’s set in the sixth layer.

This means the movie must be seen so that viewers can understand Season 2’s story.

The announcement of Season 2’s follow-up was made just recently. It was accompanied by a preview video that featured scenes from the second season.

You can watch the preview video here:

This new video doesn’t feature any new scenes, nor does it provide any information about what to expect. There’s also no word on whether the story will be continued as a TV series or a movie.

At the end of Season 2, only a couple of manga chapters have not yet been adapted, meaning there’s likely not enough source material for either a movie or a series.

While there’s talk about the follow-up being an original story, there are fans who believe that the upcoming sequel won’t be an anime-original.

Specifically, users on Reddit believe that it will simply take a while before the next season. This is based on the release schedule of the previous season and the movie.

Series creator Akihito Tsukushi also shared on Twitter that he might have to release chapters at a faster pace, likely meaning that the next anime will still be based on his manga.

Whatever the case may be, we’ll likely have to wait a while before we get more info on Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun's sequel.
