Last week, Lucasfilm announced a new Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu is in the works with the show's creator Jon Favreau set to direct and production slated to begin later this year.

While the announcement prompted a lot of excitement amongst fans, they also wondered whether a fourth season of the series is still happening or if this movie is a sign that Din Djarin and Grogu's adventure will continue on the big screen instead.

So far, Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed the fate of the Disney+ series but there is no doubt that the movie announcement is a massive game-changer regarding the future of the franchise.

A recent newsletter from The Hollywood Reporter sheds some light on Lucasfilm's decision to continue The Mandalorian as a movie instead of moving forward with a fourth season.

They revealed that the studio was planning to do a fourth season of the series and all scripts were already written. However, last year's Hollywood strikes made them reassess their plans.

As a result, they decided to shift the supposed fourth season of the series into The Mandalorian & Grogu movie and set it as their priority.

They are also unclear regarding the status of the fourth season of the series and they speculated that it's "not a given" now due to the shift. In addition, they confirmed that Favreau is co-writing the script with Dave Filoni.

This pretty much confirms what most fans have assumed regarding the fourth season following the movie announcement since this is an indication that it is no longer happening anytime soon and Lucasfilm is eyeing the big-screen project instead as the next step for The Mandalorian characters.

We're still far ways off regarding the full details of the plans that they have in mind for the movie, but it is an exciting development that we will follow in the coming months as they are preparing for the production of the film.

The first three seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney+.
