Look Back is one of Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga, and it was released in Shonen Jump+ back in 2021. It got a lot of praise from critics and fans alike for its themes and art.

Given how popular it has become, there have been many rumors of an anime adaptation over the past months. Finally, the long-awaited anime adaptation has been confirmed.

Its announcement came with a trailer that showed off the film’s unique art style. Even though it’s a short teaser, it does give fans a nice taste of what to expect.

A longer trailer was released in mid-April 2024. The new trailer highlights the movie's theme titled Light song by composer Haruka Nakamura and singer urara.

It features new clips from the film and shows fans what they can expect to see in the highly anticipated adaptation of Fujimoto's one-shot.

Producing the anime is Studio Durian, an anime studio by Kiyotaka Oshiyama. This film will be the studio’s first major project.

Before this film, Studio Durian has worked to support other anime productions such as Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, The Boy and the Heron.

Look Back has also unveiled the staff members working on the film, and they are as follows:

  • Art Director: Kiyoshi Sameshima (The Boy and the Beast)
  • Art Director Assistants: Yoshio Harisaki (Detective Conan Magic File 2), Takashi Omori (Tales from Earthsea)
  • Color Key Artist: Maya Kusumoto (Dr. Stone)
  • Compositing Director of Photography: Kazuto Izumita (Bleach)
  • Editing: Kiyoshi Hirose (INU-OH)
  • Sound Director: Eriko Kimura (Tiger & Bunny)
  • Music: Haruka Nakamura

Look Back Anime Release Date Announced

The anime adaptation being a film makes sense. After all, the Look Back manga is a one-shot, meaning the story won’t be enough to fill out a one-season anime.

On the flip side, adapting it into one standard-length anime episode (like Oda’s Monsters 103) might not be enough given that the manga’s story is fairly long for a one-shot.

Thus, it’ll be interesting to see how long the film will be. The film will likely be around an hour or so, though that depends on how it adapts the original story.

What we do know is the Look Back anime film’s release date. This movie will be released in Japanese cinemas on June 28, 2024.

For now, there’s no word yet on release plans for the film outside of Japan. Chances are that it will get a cinema release in the US and other select countries (even if it’s a limited one) given Fujimoto’s popularity.
