After many rumors, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back is officially getting an anime, but it’s being produced by an unexpected studio. Following its reveal, there has been a lot of talk about who exactly is Studio Durian, the studio behind the upcoming Look Back anime.

Despite the studio not being the most well-known, the fact that Look Back is getting an anime should be great news for Fujimoto’s fans.

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back Is Finally Getting an Anime Adaptation

It’s fair to say that Tatsuki Fujimoto is one of the most well-known manga artists right now, and this is thanks in large part to his mega-hit series Chainsaw Man.

The Chainsaw Man manga may be Fujimoto’s best-known work, but that’s not his only manga. There’s Fire Punch, which is Fujimoto’s first serialized work, as well as an array of one-shot manga.

Among these is Look Back, the one-shot coming-of-age manga that was released in Shonen Jump+ back in July 2021.

Given its popularity, there were many rumors and predictions about the one-shot title getting an anime. These turned out to be right as an anime adaptation was finally announced.

The new anime adaptation will come in the form of a movie. This makes sense considering that its story is too long to be covered in a 20-minute anime episode, though it’s not long enough to be a series.

While the fact that it’s a movie is fairly expected, what many didn’t anticipate is the film’s studio. Given the popularity of Chainsaw Man, many expected MAPPA to handle production duties.

The upcoming Look Back film is being produced by Studio Durian (not Studio Dorian as others may think). Look Back will be their first major project, though the studio has helped with other anime before.

For starters, Studio Durian assisted in the production of Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron. The studio also worked on character design for Rising Impact, as well as ghost design for FLCL: Shoegaze.

Studio founder Kiyotaka Oshiyama is the director of this new film. Oshiyama has worked on various popular titles over the years, including Devilman Crybaby, Mob Psycho 100, and My Dress-Up Darling.

For now, there’s no word yet on the film’s main cast. What we do know is that the Look Back movie will be released in Japanese cinemas on June 28, 2024.

There’s no word yet on release plans for the film in cinemas outside of Japan.
