A good number of MCU diehards were quite distraught when they found out that the iconic God of Mischief died during the opening moments of Avengers: Infinity War.

Since his death happened even before the Snap occurred, this pretty much confirmed every fan’s fear: Loki really is dead. Well, at least the Loki from the main MCU timeline we all knew.

However, this fact was quickly reverted when Tom Hiddleston returned to the MCU shortly after, to lead his own titular character’s series on Disney Plus.

The only difference here is we’re watching a totally different variant of him now, the 2012 Loki who wreaked havoc in New York.

Now, before we delve into what Loki Season 2 has in store for us, here’s a little recap and ending explanation as to what happened before we meet the newest Kang the Conqueror variant, Victor Timely.

The main thing you have to remember is that Sylvie (aka the Lady Loki variant) has a main plan in mind and that is to destroy the Time Variance Authority, whoever is behind it.

It was only in the finale of Loki Season 1 that the series finally unveiled who is responsible for the creation of the TVA as well as the Time-Keepers, and that is none other than He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors).

The Kang variant was completely open with the two Lokis standing before him. Loki and Sylvie had two choices: to either kill him and potentially cause another Multiversal war or the two Lokis take over the TVA as the new rulers.

Loki wasn’t willing to risk destroying the entire world just to fulfill their wish of ridding the TVA of controlling every detail in the universe. But Sylvie wasn’t willing to let go of her grudge that easily. So, she kills the Kang variant.

Instead of feeling triumphant over achieving her main goal in life, though, as her actress, Sophia Di Martino, told Vanity Fair: “I think [regret] will definitely come at some point.”

This caused even more branching of the timelines, with Mobius and Hunter B-15 forgetting Loki’s identity, and the awakening of the other Kang variants, which begs the question, how does this set up Loki Season 2?

Loki Season 1 Ending Explained: How Does This Set Up Season 2?

Loki and Sylvie Part Ways

The two once seemingly perfect pair of Lokis have now officially parted ways, with Loki proving himself to be a changed man (much similar to the version we grew up with) and Sylvie going down the strayed path she’s been familiar with since she’s been running from the TVA.

Although, given that there’s a new threat coming to Loki Season 2, and the few released clips of Loki finding Sylvie working at McDonald’s, the official trailer for their return also teases the mischievous duo will be reuniting to face a common enemy once more.

Sylvie Kills He Who Remains

Because of Sylvie’s ultimate decision to kill He Who Remains, this turned the TVA into a massive Kang the Conqueror headquarters. Instead of finding the Time-Keepers as the statues surrounding the HQ, Kang replaces the image with himself.

Since then, we’ve seen Kang the Conqueror face Ant-Man in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and now, the Kang Prime aka the strongest variant, Victor Timely, will be holding the door for us this Season 2.

As for what exactly he is planning to do remains a secret for now, but if we’re looking at the comics, this won’t be the easiest big bad variant to defeat.

Mobius Forgets Who Loki Is

The Loki Season 2 official trailer sees the titular character and Mobius working together once more. This time, with trouble on Loki’s end in a matter of ‘time-slipping’.

We’re likely going to see them rebuilding the friendship they once had in the first season, one of the only friends Loki managed to gain on his journey since getting stolen from the 2012 timeline of his glorious purpose to take over New York.

The Timelines Have Gone AWOL

It’s not only Loki who’s having trouble with ‘time-slipping.’ In fact, we also got to see the other TVA characters, Ravonna (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Casey (Eugene Cordero), and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) living in different versions of themselves from the trailer.

But most importantly, we’re also seeing the main threat Loki will be facing in Season 2, as the God of Mischief asked him, “But how do you choose who lives and who dies?”

To which Victor Timely responded, “Make the hard choice”, meaning a greater force to be reckoned with is waiting for their return.
