It all started a few months ago when the trailer of the film came out. Some users on Twitter got the Lisa Frankenstein pun right away. Meanwhile, others just got the pun now that the movie came out in theaters.

So what is the pun in the title of Lisa Frankenstein? Well, if you had your childhood in the 80s and 90s, you'll get the reference right away.

This is because the title of the movie is a play on a popular brand that sold neon-themed animal characters for its school supplies: Lisa Frank.

And this is actually not a complete surprise since the film is set in the 80s. So there's the whole neon vibe, the Madonna-inspired hair, and the retro fashion that the movie was made of.

Lisa Frank is a popular brand that sells notebooks, pencil cases, backpacks, stickers, and just about anything that teenage girls would love. The highlight of all these products is that they use bright colors and sparkles.

They also had a slew of characters inspired by animals and fictional beings like Markie the unicorn, Painter Bear the panda, Casey and Candy the cute Golden Retriever puppies, Max Splash the orca, and many others.

In 2013, the Lisa Frank factory shut down. But just six years later, the brand launched its website and started to partner with new companies to sell their designs.

Among the brands where you can get a Lisa Frank product today include Morphe, Loungefly, and Crocs. Through the partnership, they are able to get past its selection of school supply products.

There doesn't seem to be a connection between the two. Although the Lisa Frankenstein pun pays homage to the iconic brand, they are not officially connected.

Picking out this title may have had something to do with director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody's love letter to the 80s.

After all, the movie is set in this period.
